Singer Qualifications

This program has been designed for competent choral singers who regularly rehearse and sing with a chorus. It is expected that you will come having learned the notes. The scores for Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysrerium and "Dirait-on," as well as a commercial recording of the pieces will be mailed to you when you register. Rehearsal sessions will be for musical refinement, not note learning, so that you do credit to the compositions and enjoy the experience to the utmost. The final performance will be Sunday evening.

The setting is ideal, the compositions are extraordinary, and the weekend promises to be fantastic. Plan to join us. We are sure this weekend will be a highlight of your singing "career."

Your Hosts

Since its founding in 1975, the Angeles Chorale has been a predominantly volunteer organization, drawing upon the significant musical talent in the Los Angeles area. The Chorale experienced significant development between 1986 and 1995 under the leadership of John Alexander.

In 1996 Donald Neuen, former director of the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and close associate of the late Robert Shaw, assumed the position of Artistic Director. His chief interest is the performance of major works with orchestra. He has attracted many new young singers to the Chorale. Today our 120 members have significant musical resumés, and the Chorale has become well known for world-class performances of the extended choral masterworks.

Visit the Angeles Chorale website.

Asilomar Conference Grounds was designed almost 100 years ago by the legendary American architect Julia Morgan who, among her many achievements, was also the architect of Hearst Castle. Her original buildings at Asilomar were built as the YWCA Western Regional Conference Center in 1913 on a spectacular ocean-front site on the Monterey Peninsula. The buildings are situated under the pines, clustered around an open clearing, directly across the dunes from the beach.

Asilomar is at its best in September. Sunny skies and warm air usually prevail, with a minimum of fog. The setting is magical.

All of your meals and three nights’ lodging are included in the cost of the program. Housing will be in shared doubles in deluxe units, with a few triples or quads also available.

Our housing is all on the main grounds, but there is walking between buildings and some stairs to negotiate. If you need special assistance, an Asilomar van is on call for transportation. Some rooms are handicapped-accessible. If you need one, please note that on the registration form.

Meals are taken together in Crocker Dining Hall. The food is plentiful and varied, and special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior arrangements. Again, please note if you have dietary restrictions or prefer vegetarian meals.

Facilities at Asilomar for your free time include a swimming pool, bikes for rent, sand volleyball court, pool tables, ping pong table, gift store, nature trails in the dunes and the beach! Nearby are the Seventeen-Mile Drive, the shops of Carmel, and Monterey with its historic buildings, marvelous aquarium and Cannery Row.

If you live too far away to drive, Monterey airport is served by several airlines. Go to: www.montereyairport.com. Transportation from the airport to Asilomar is available on a public bus, taxi or the Monterey/Salinas Airbus - www.montereyairbus.com
